Happy Birthday Earl of Sandwich

My favorite food is sandwiches, so I cannot believe I spaced National Sandwich Day (today!)

I didn’t even have a sandwich today to honor the holiday.

I wished a friend a happy National Sandwich Day (because that’s what you do, right?), so he headed out to try a BBQ sandwich from a vendor at the Public Market. I already ordered a pizza, so the best I can do…

My 5 favorite sandwiches (right now), in no particular order:

- Lee’s Sandwiches’ BBQ Pork Banh Mi
The combination of tangy pickled veggies, fresh cilantro, spicy jalepenos and sweet barbecued meat makes for an interesting (and enjoyable) sandwich.

- Chaka Chaka’s Jerk Chicken Sandwich
The newest addition to my “favorite sandwich” list, Chaka Chaka’s jerk chicken sandwich is filled with flavorful chicken and banana, which gave it a surprisingly sweet taste (but not too sweet).

- Duck & Decanter’s Where’s the Beef with a side of rice vinegar (a MUST)
I’ve been eating this magic combo since my sister was a sandwich maker at the Duck about 18 years ago. The ingredients read like a  what’s-what on the veggies-you-should eat list: cucumber, jicama, sprouts, tomato, lettuce, celery — add some pine nuts for good measure, and you’ve got yourself a sandwich. But the real treat, is the rice vinegar, which should be drizzled inside the sandwich. I won’t eat it without my side of R/V.

- Park Central Deli’s Open-face Turkey Sandwich (Tuesday & Fridays)
Get Thanksgiving dinner to order…twice a week. Two slices of white bread, hand-carved turkey, mashed potatoes and stuffing all covered in gravy and paired with a side of cranberry relish (I usually ask for 2).

- Gallo Blanco’s Naco Torta (see pic)
A sandwich made with carne asada and avocado on a soft roll tastes delicious. Add a fried egg — it’s heaven!
