Adventure lunch: Chaka Chaka
It’s been entirely too long since I’ve been on an adventure lunch, but after reading a New Times profile of Chaka Chaka, I decided adventure time is now and headed to south downtown.
Chaka Chaka is a tiny restaurant/counter (4-6 stools inside, 3 or 4 tables outside) whose menu features a few sandwiches, a hot dog, and fries. Also available, a few beverages, along with some changing counter options (my visit featured plums, bananas and brownies).
The frazzled owner (?) suggested the Jerk Chicken sandwich ($5, see above) — which I went with. It was filled with flavorful chicken and banana, which had a surprisingly sweet taste (but not too sweet).
Also on the menu, a variety of egg sandwiches. My husband had the Chorico (a link sausage, see below), egg and cheese, which he enjoyed after a liberal dousing of Tapatio.
Our dining companion suggested we pass on the fries next time. Not a problem. That leaves more room for a giant brownie.
