Desert veggies: June

I went to Baker’s Nursery over the weekend and got thoroughly depressed when I saw the size of the cucumber and squash plants they have growing on the premises.

Giant plants laden with veggies.

Hmph. When I grew zucchini, I was lucky to get 5 fruits the whole season.

I still have a lot to learn about desert gardening, but Baker’s amazingly productive garden is proof-positive that summer gardening is achievable. Mine is still in its infancy (I’m crossing my fingers my cucumbers will actually produce).

Some things you can start from seed right now:

- Cucumbers
- Melons (cantaloupe, muskmelon)
- Pumpkin (plant June 15th for pumpkins at Halloween time)
- Sunflowers
- Black-eyed peas

I’ve got a head-start on cucumbers…

beans…

and my very first sunflower…

This really is inspiring. I tried transplanting a basil plant into an indoor pot yesterday but it’s already wilting as if I cut the water supply to it. But I still aspire to grow my own tomatoes to can them.

You should try growing them upside down. Mine worked pretty well last year, until the old weather-beaten bucket I put them in disintegrated. http://oldfashionedliving.com/tomato2.html

You read my mind. I almost bought a thingie at Ace that was for sale for $29 (standing planter with both an upright bed and hanging planter function) but I punked out at the last minute. I figured I could make one for twice that amount. lol

I’m glad you posted that link, though. Thank you. :^)
