Phoenix things-to-do: April 30 – May 2
FRIDAY

Conan O’Brien @ Dodge Theater
His tour is entitled “The Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television Tour.” All that funny needs an outlet, right? That’s what I was betting on when I got my tickets to the Dodge performance Friday night.

Frances 4th Anniversary @ Frances Vintage
It’s hard to remember those bleak days more than 4 years ago when Phoenix didn’t have funky gift spot and downtown mainstay Frances Vintage. Celebrate the local boutique’s 4th birthday today with trunk shows, raffles and a selection of Tom’s shoes designed by local artists.

David Sedaris @ Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts
I remember nearly wetting my pants during certain chapters of Me Talk Pretty One Day. David Sedaris is laugh-out-loud funny, and he’s reading some of his newest work on Saturday. It’s currently sold out, but maybe there’s a ticket or 2 to be scalped?
Scottsdale Center for the Performing

Grow a mustache
In my household, May 1st marks the beginning of the month of the moustache. Get in on moustache love by joining (or supporting) my husband’s fundraising site, Fund-A-Stache.org, which is a venue for growers to support a charity with their facial hair. MoustacheMay.com also starts on May 1, which creates a community among the artistic with moustaches.
SUNDAY
Peach picking @ Schnepf Farms
U-Pick Peach season started Friday
You like cobbler? It’s the first official weekend of peach-picking season, and the mild weather makes it the perfect time to trek out to Queenscreek (and it is a trek) for some delicious fruit. Schnepf Farms has boxes — and groves of trees chalk full o’ peaches. My tip, pick peaches that are still slightly unripe. They’ll last a little longer with fewer bruises.
Schnepf Farms
24810 S. Rittenhouse Road
Queen Creek, AZ 85242
Entrance is free.
U-pick peaches
are $1.75 per pound
7:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.
CRACKING GOOD THINGS OF THE WEEK
- Yeasayer’s O.N.E.
I’ve spent the week singing this song with my own lyrics. My husbands continues singing with the right lyrics, which I feel is just biting my joyful moment.
- Chloe Moretz
I love watching young gals dominate — and when they have a potty mouth, like Chloe Moretz’s character in Kick Ass, it’s even more entertaining.
If the shoe (and price) fits
What’s Cracking Good — Old Navy shoes
**UPDATE** Both of these shoes are now 30% off online with coupon code ONBIG30 through May 2.
Since I quit my job, I’ve tried to stay away from discount clothing stores. I tend toward intoxication by low prices and end up buying things I don’t ultimately want or need.
But while waiting for my car to get serviced the other day, I went into Old Navy and found a pair black flats in exactly the shape I’ve been looking for…for under $20!
So excited by my comfy, casual purchase, I went online to see what other footwear offerings they might have, and I found these cute t-strap (love t-strap!) wedgies:
I also ended up with a $15 military-style jacket I don’t need. Sigh.
Does this make me look fat?
What’s Cracking Good — A second opinion
My husband is often my style backboard. I’ll give him a brief fashion show, and he’ll let me know if he thinks I should change my shoes, wear a different cardigan or go back to the drawing board. I don’t always take his advice, but I often wonder what I’d look like without my trusted second opinion.
Go Try it On is a new site that makes the Internet your outfit sounding board. Either upload a photo and await constructive criticism, or scroll through photos and offer your own sage style advice.
Sail away
Sailor dresses aren’t just for toddlers anymore. Cute stripes, bibbed backs and jaunty ties are all over this season. Here are a few I’m liking:

Sonia Rykiel Breton Striped Dress, $250
Sailor Navy, $185
Dorset Romper, $42.99
Shopping Etsy: Tennis, anyone?
For the past couple of years, a friend and I have gone to a local park and hit a couple balls during his work off-season. We call it tennis.
I’ve barely played in 20 years. He’s new to the game. My forehand blows. His backhand (sorry, Nick) could use some help.
Every time we play, I leave the public courts determined to practice more or take some lessons. Eventually it gets hot, I get sedentary, and I don’t play until the next off-season and the urge strikes.
Maybe, just maybe some tennis-inspired Etsy will get the proverbial ball bouncing?

1.) ’70s Tennis Dress, $19
2.) Racket Pendant, $24
3.) Tennis Scarf, $3
4.) Wire Ball Basket, $40
5.) Forehand Checkbook Cover, $8
6.) Recycled Tennis Greeting Cards, $5
7.) Yellow & White Tennis Carry-all, $38
Wanna play? There are tennis leagues for beginners and intermediates at Encanto Park or more lessons and leagues in Scottsdale.
